Despite having one of the sleekest names on the web, One.com offers fairly average hosting and is nothing to get particularly excited about. While very low prices will probably tempt in some of the budget hosting market, these do not translate into particularly good value for money, as many of One's specifications are minimal and the company offers little in the way of extra features. While hosting with One.com is largely functional and certainly involves little financial risk, you can do much better elsewhere.
Unlimited bandwidth is about where the impressive specifications end at One.com. With a very small hard disk allowance, minimal design and management tools and nothing in the way of e-Commerce facilities, businesses and personal sites alike will struggle to reach their potential within One's limitations. There is some good news: daily backup isn't to be found everywhere in the shared hosting market, and impressive uptime records are not to be sniffed at. And, despite not going the extra mile when it comes to website design, the company does at least offer some basic tools in this department, alongside basic script support. However, other features that look promising at first may later turn out to be nothing beyond the ordinary. The benefit of a free domain name, for instance, is entirely negated by the £9.00 setup fee, the two equating to about the same sum. And while the Google AdWords credits are a good start for those setting up a business website, they are now offered by the vast majority of quality hosting companies, and are certainly no reason to choose One.com over the competition.
Another of the company's weaknesses lies in its very limited range of products. Users who exceed the tight limitations will not simply be able to upscale with One.com, as it offers no more advanced shared plans or virtual private servers. For small businesses, in particular, this is something to consider, as it could mean having to transfer your website to another host at a later date.
As is the case with many web hosting companies, One's support system is one of its weakest features. Such a flaw is fairly terminal, particularly in an industry in which adequate technical support is so important. Even with good uptime records, it is likely that you will experience problems with your hosting at some stage, and you need to be confident that you can access the necessary support. Despite 24-hour live chat and a ticket system that allows you to attach files and send them to a technical advisor, One lacks telephone support, the preferred option of many and often the best way to guarantee an immediate response to your query. The online help center is even more limited, with only a few dozen basic guides and FAQs; what there is is also not searchable, so you need to scroll through the topics and search manually.
Those drawn to One.com will most likely be after the cheapest hosting available, rather than any particular features or promises of good performance. However, with dozens of sites across the web now offering similarly cheap deals and even free shared plans, One does not do enough to stand out.
