Editor's Review:

webfusion are one of the most experienced names in web hosting, having provided these services since 1997, before the dot com crash, so taking a plan with them will never be a risk, even though it may not be the best value out there. They offer shared hosting, as well as a reseller package, and VPS deals, all run from their UK based eco-friendly datacenter.

Shared Hosting

There are four packages on offer here, each bursting with features, but without much disk space. The first plan, ‘Starter’, will cost you £3.95 a month on an annual contract, though paid for month by month it is a pound extra. With other companies, prices can often vary more than this between yearly and monthly billing, so if you do need a shorter term deal this could theoretically suit you. You receive 1.5GB of disk space and 20GB of traffic with this plan, which should be enough for most personal websites, though this is by no means generous. However, there are plenty of add-ons, not least a host of apps from webfusion including the very popular WordPress and Joomla, plus £80 of marketing credit thrown in, not bad for a £47.40 a year plan. There’s also a free ‘.co.uk’ domain name, a choice of operating systems between Linux and Windows with no change in cost, and this plan, like all the others, is covered by webfusion’s 99.9% uptime guarantee. However, there is a lot missing in this very basic package, meaning many customers will want to consider upgrading to the company’s next plan, ‘Professional’, which comes with MySQL databases, unlike its predecessor, and also offers a considerable increase in space and bandwidth, though again not as generous as you might hope. The ‘Business’ and ‘Developer’ plans further increase in these three aspects, as well as adding more FTP and email accounts, which are a feature of all the plans. The £18.95 a month Developer plan, however, serves to illustrate webfusion’s poor value when compared with its competitors: with a storage limit of 20GB and only 300GB monthly traffic allowed, webfusion’s offering looks meager next to plans on the market that will offer both storage and bandwidth at unlimited levels for half the price.

Reseller Hosting

Webfusion offer just one reseller package, but it comes with pretty much everything you need to get started, and anything further you should require is likely to be an optional extra. £29.99 a month gives you limitless space and traffic allowance, as well as letting you host as many sites and set up as many email accounts as you wish. In addition, they offer anonymous nameservers, so your users need not know that your company is not the one really providing the hosting. There are several other reseller features as well, including bandwidth monitoring and a custom control panel, so overall you are definitely getting value for money.

VPS Hosting

If you’re looking for your own server, or at least, your own partition on a server, webfusion have five different VPS plans, ranging from just £14.99 to £64.99 a month. Every plan includes unlimited bandwidth, meaning your sites can receive as much traffic as you can hope for them to, as well as a unique IP address and use of the Plesk10 control panel, all hosted with high performance Intel processors. The plans themselves differ only in terms of disk space, guaranteed and burstable RAM, and the number of sites you are allowed to host with them.

Support

Always the first deal-breaker to look for, poor support can cancel out any benefits a plan may have. A good infrastructure is therefore essential, and webfusion provide this. Online FAQs and tutorials should answer most basic questions you may have, while in the case of an actual incident there is a dedicated 24/7 support phone line, as well as a ticketing system and live web chat. Whatever your problem, webfusion probably have it covered.

webfusion are offering decent value-for-money packages, backed up by a great support network and some nice additional touches to most of their plans. However, despite all this, there are still better value deals out there, and webfusion aren’t the only trusted name on the market.
