Editor's Review:

IPower.com has established itself over ten years as a reliable name in personal hosting alongside that for small- and medium-sized businesses. With four shared options and two VPS choices, their range of plans may not match those of larger sites, but what they do offer compares favorably with many. Like many sites, IPower has gone eco-friendly, meaning your website can boast a Green Badge showing the data center handling it has prevented the annual CO2 equivalent of driving over 6 million miles! As well as looking after the environment they seem to have prospective customers in mind - besides the difference in price between payment options and clearly-explained promotional prices there’s no small print to be found.  As you’d expect from a company also offering web design services, IPower’s site is easy to navigate. They may have used something more advanced, but their free CM4all web creation tool is pretty handy, aimed at helping those without extensive computer knowledge design their own sites quickly and easily, and it comes with one or two hundred templates as standard.  In short, any budding internet tycoon should find a lot of what they need to get started with minimum hassle.

Shared Hosting

The basic Starter plan comes in at just $3.95 a month, which although not the cheapest out there is still decent value for money; with support for most major scripts and free set-up options available, it’s not a bad package to get websites up and running. To get your site noticed once it’s off the ground there is also a selection of marketing freebies included with all plans, in some cases worth more than your initial outlay will be! Credit with Yahoo, Bing, Google and Facebook means your site can begin attracting visitors and customers from the start. Another $2 a month will get you IPower’s most popular plan, Pro Plan.  The next step up from Starter, this is a competitive business-level plan, offering unlimited storage and bandwidth along with eCommerce starter support for under $6 a month. These specifications will allow you to have as many visitors to your site as you can entice with your new advertising know-how and credit. There are also free domain registrations on all options except Starter, with three if you opt for Pro Plus. On a shared hosting plan this is a welcome bonus and potential money-saver. Unsurprisingly this suits small businesses down to the ground, as a couple of extra domain names are a simple way to attract customers.

VPS

IPower is sadly far from competitive when it comes to Virtual Private Servers. Its two options offer impressive bandwidth allowing plenty of data transfer to and from your site, but neither the dedicated memory nor the disk space offer great value for money and a lack of burstable memory means your website may suffer under short-term heavy traffic surges. In this category then, the strong support system and even more marketing credit fail to make up for the lower spec options.

Support

Many sites can look like great bets until this acid test, but without adequate support many users may struggle at some stage or another. Luckily, IPower does offer a dedicated 24/7 support number (as opposed to having to go through a sales rep first) and live online chat facilities, as well as guides and tutorials in a well organized knowledgebase to aid with design, email, website promotion and more.

Offering decent shared hosting options and good support for beginners, IPower is a reasonable performer without any stand-out features, and its VPS deals are definite 'no's. In short, unless you’re desperate for a chunk of Facebook advertising credit with your shared hosting plan, you’d be better off with one of the bigger names, so check out our top 10 sites.
