Editor's Review:

The first thing you may notice about MidPhase Hosting is that their website is a little overwhelming, and unless you know exactly what you want, you could waste time looking through their different products.  But if you have a clear idea of what you or your business need, you will find that there are some impressive hosting plans at MidPhase.com, and it is worth taking a few minutes to look at them.

Shared Hosting

When it comes to choosing a website, a lot of emphasis is often put on the specifications, such as disc space and bandwidth allowance, and judging by these criteria MidPhase Hosting is an impressive company.  But with even their most basic plan offering unlimited bandwidth and storage, you would be right to think there must be something else missing.  The 'Starter' package, whilst cheap, offers quite limited functionality, does not support the same array of scripts and will not even allow you to install Wordpress.  If you want more flexibility, you will have to go for the 'Unlimited' plan at the very least.  MidPhase's shared hosting packages are a bit pricier than that of some of their competitors.  The costs listed above are for 24-month contracts, and you will need to pay considerably more if you want a shorter term hosting plan.  Fortunately, MidPhase do offer a 30-day money back guarantee, so you can trial their hosting without incurring any costs if things do not work out.

Virtual Private Servers

MidPhase Hosting does not sell virtual private servers on their own website, but redirects customers to VPS.net.  This is a very easy-to-use website, where you can select a server based on how many nodes you require.  A slide-bar allows you to adjust this number and see the specifications of your server change accordingly.  Of course, the main weakness with this system is that it does not allow you to increase one variable without increasing the others.  You cannot, for instance, purchase a server with low storage but high bandwidth, and this will mean that the servers do not offer value for money if you have a particular use in mind for your server that would necessitate these sorts of configurations.  It also means that you are limited by what is possible with 18 nodes - 180 GB of storage, for instance, which is less than the upper limits offered by some virtual private server packages.  However, for the majority of users, this method will allow you to find a server that suits your needs.

Dedicated Servers

Just as with their virtual private servers, MidPhase does not offer their own dedicated servers, but instead sells those from three of the big players in the business: ThePlanet, LeaseWeb and SoftLayer.  This seems like a fair decision - why try to beat the competition when you could just sell on their products?  This has the advantage of letting you compare some of the most popular and impressive plans from three major hosting companies, and MidPhase sell them on at very reasonable rates.  You may even be able to make a considerable saving over the original.  However, to secure these savings, MidPhase has focused on a small number of plans, meaning the customer is given very little choice over customizations.  Fine if you are happy to go for a pre-configured plan; not so great if you are after flexibility.

Support

MidPhase's support is one of the areas where it lets itself down.  Email and live chat support are not enough to make up for the lack of 24-hour toll-free telephone support center, and their online help area could be more interactive.  However, everything that is here is adequate, and staff are generally helpful.

MidPhase Hosting is certainly not a good hosting solution for everyone.  Those looking for flexible and versatile shared hosting plans can find better elsewhere, and anyone wanting customization from a dedicated or virtual private server will be disappointed.  However, in a number of plans across each category, MidPhase manages to deliver good value for money and impressive specifications, and may just be worth having a look at.
