UK2 have a long history of secure, high performance hosting and have been known to go for months without any network downtime. They offer four shared hosting options, from Starter to Business Plus, as well as a cloud hosting Business option to guarantee performance and reliability. They will also set up your website for you for a fee, so if you’ve not the time or know-how to do it yourself, their staff are on hand with 1- or 3-day setup available.
The UK2 range begins with the ‘Starter’ option, which will set you back 1p short of a pound a month. One assumes they give this option as the one they hope customers on higher-spec packages might mention to their friends, having seen it on the UK2 website, as it offers very little even given the tiny price tag. Aside from UK2’s impeccable uptime figures, the 500MB disk space and 1GB bandwidth aren’t too impressive, and easily bettered by many free hosting options elsewhere.
Better then, to consider their ‘Home’ package, which retails at £2.95 a month, and is geared towards building and hosting larger personal sites. Included is the award-winning cPanel software, a site builder and support for most major languages - PHP 5.2.5, Perl etc. The storage and bandwidth, however, are minimal, with 3GB and 100GB offered respectively; market leaders have storage levels similar to that of UK2’s bandwidth!
The Business option continues in a similar vein, with 100GB and 1000GB now for just shy of £6 a month. Upgrade to the £13.95 Business Plus plan, however, and those restrictions disappear, and included free in the service now is ‘moreUK2’- a support system (available on any plan for an extra monthly fee) offering dedicated 10 minute callbacks, access to scripts and web-design templates and unlimited SSL’s. They also promise 100% uptime with this plan, so you’re compensated whenever the servers go down.
Another £10 a month gets you ‘Business Cloud’, with the obvious added attractions of cloud hosting, namely the resources of a whole web of servers at your site’s disposal (meaning they can handle spikes in traffic without problems) and the ability to switch hardware in the case of failure, keeping your site online when technical difficulties might otherwise have knocked it out .These bonuses are worth a lot in the hosting world, meaning that this option is probably UK2’s most attractive product. Cloud hosting often retails at around $20, and many place restrictions on space and bandwidth, so in that respect, though slightly pricier, UK2’s unlimited plan puts it in good standing.
This is always a crucial area for hosting providers, as trying to fix your site with poor support can be infuriating. UK2 offers a UK-based 24/7 phone support center, in addition to extensive online resources: a ticketing system, FAQ database and live chat.
High performance figures often mean higher prices, and with UK2 this is unfortunately the case. Though their cloud hosting specs are fairly impressive, none of their options offer market-beating value for money, though they are a reliable, high-performance brand.
